What it looks like when a spring gives out
The signs are hard to miss. The door feels far heavier than it used to, or it won't stay up when you lift it by hand. The opener hums or strains and the door barely moves. Some people hear a loud bang from the garage and find a visible gap in the spring coil.
If you see any of this, stop using the door. Running the opener against a broken spring is hard on the motor and the rest of the hardware, and the door can come down faster than you expect. Call us and leave it closed if you can.
Why we replace springs as a pair
If your door has two springs and only one has broken, we replace both. The two share the load. They have been stretched and released the same number of times, so the one still standing has the same wear as the one that failed. Swapping only the broken one usually means a second call before long.
Replacing both also keeps the lift even. A new spring paired with a tired one can leave the door pulling to one side, which is how you end up with a binding, noisy door and extra wear on the tracks.

Extension springs and the safety cable
Some doors use extension springs, which run alongside the horizontal tracks and stretch as the door closes. On these systems we run a safety cable through each spring and secure it to the wall or ceiling. A stretched spring that snaps can whip across the garage. The cable catches it and keeps it from flying at a car, a shelf or a person.
If you have an older extension system with no cables, tell us when you call. It is one of the first things we look for, and we would rather add the cable during the repair than leave the same hazard in place.
The tools, and what they're for
We use a tape measure and a level. The tape confirms the new springs match what the door needs, so we are not guessing from the broken one. The level checks that the door and its horizontal tracks sit true once the springs are on. A spring balances properly only if the door hangs straight.
Before we leave, we run the door by hand and then on the opener. It should lift smoothly and stay where we leave it halfway. If it drifts, something is off and we keep working.
What the repair costs
Garage door spring replacement runs $150 to $350 per replacement. We quote after we have seen the door, because the exact price depends on what is actually on it. The total changes depending on whether the door has one spring or two, and if it is an extension system needing safety cables. We will tell you the figure before we start.
Storm exposure in Boynton Beach is high, and you do not want to discover a broken spring the day a storm is on the way and you need the door to open and close.
When it's the spring, and when it's the whole door
Most of the time a failed spring is just a failed spring, and replacing it brings the door back. A door that is badly damaged, or has several worn parts beyond the springs, is a different conversation. We will say so plainly. A new door is a much bigger job: the old one comes out, and the springs and cables go on at the end once the sections, tracks and rollers are in. We would not sell you that when a spring will do, and we will not patch a door that has truly run its course.
